A natural gathering place, Campbell\u2019s store was the only trading post and outfitting station between Salina and the Rocky Mountains from 1858 through most of 1859. Campbell never refused a customer, treating all equally and trading with both settlers and Native Americans. Fellow town founder Alexander Spilman said, \u201cHe is one the best and truest men I ever knew.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide is-stacked-on-mobile\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"357\" height=\"514\" src=\"https:\/\/walksalina.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/AM-Campbell-F2-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-264 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/walksalina.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/AM-Campbell-F2-1.jpg 357w, https:\/\/walksalina.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/AM-Campbell-F2-1-208x300.jpg 208w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 357px) 100vw, 357px\" \/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>No one worked harder for the interests of the town than Alexander Campbell. In addition to running the store, Campbell also ran a free ferry across the Smoky Hill River, where Iron Avenue crosses the river today. He also served for more than 25 years as Salina\u2019s postmaster and was elected register of deeds of Saline County. Campbell and his wife Christena were life-long residents of Salina. The Campbells hold the distinction of being the first Salina settlers to be married and their daughter, Christina, was the first white child born in the county.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide is-stacked-on-mobile\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"940\" height=\"788\" src=\"https:\/\/walksalina.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/Strand-2022.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-662 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/walksalina.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/Strand-2022.jpg 940w, https:\/\/walksalina.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/Strand-2022-300x251.jpg 300w, https:\/\/walksalina.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/Strand-2022-768x644.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 940px) 100vw, 940px\" \/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>Strand Plaza, on the west side of Santa Fe, was named after the Strand movie theater.
