It was originally called the Marianna Flats and occasionally \u201cLee Flats\u201d unofficially. The building housed a number of Lee employees over the years who lived here temporarily before moving to more permanent residences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1913, two dwellers in \u201cLee Flats\u201d were Ward Harris who rose to be the long-time treasurer for Lee Hardware, and Edward H. Merrill who joined the Lee team in 1910. Merrill worked largely in the wholesale grocery and carload produce departments until he was sent to South Bend, Indiana, as a Sales Manager in the garment division.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide is-stacked-on-mobile\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1008\" height=\"756\" src=\"https:\/\/walksalina.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Lee-Flats-2022.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-750 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/walksalina.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Lee-Flats-2022.jpg 1008w, https:\/\/walksalina.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Lee-Flats-2022-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/walksalina.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Lee-Flats-2022-768x576.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1008px) 100vw, 1008px\" \/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>Currently, the facility provides halfway house services for the public and is adjunct to the Ashby House rehabilitation center that sits across the street.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Victorian Italianate residence at 150 South 8th, across the street, was originally built about 1881 for James W. Rice (Genevive Cowden\u2019s father) and later became the home of John B. Shellabarger of Shellabarger Mills. W.O. Lyter (Lelah Cowden\u2019s father), vice-president of Shellabarger Mills, made this his home from 1899 to 1934.
